Menstrual Hygiene Education

Why Menstrual Hygiene Matters
  • Prevents infections and bad odor

  • Helps teens feel comfortable and confident

  • Keeps girls in school during their period

  • Promotes dignity and self-respect

What we are doing
  • Help girls manage their menstruation at school through improved, girl-friendly sanitation facilities.

  • Increase levels of knowledge related to menstrual health and puberty.

  • Increase support in the social ecosystem to shift norms and reduce stigma.

Our menstrual health approach includes both infrastructure and behavior change.

Our infrastructure approach focuses on ensuring access to girl-friendly sanitation facilities that are

gender-segregated, clean, well-lit, ventilated, and equipped with water for personal hygiene, waste bins for product disposal, doors that lock to ensure privacy, and in-stall components such as stall hooks and shelves.

We factor in broader considerations like the sanitation block location, the location and positioning of the external door, and provision of in-block features such as full-length mirrors to ensure accessibility, functionality, and safety.

Education and Training workshops

We work to increase knowledge, change behaviors, and shift social norms through puberty and menstrual health education. HFOIC delivers age-appropriate education to vulnerable children in primary and secondary schools to normalize periods, reduce stigma, and address common misconceptions.

We offer additional support to girls through training on the practicalities of managing menstruation and maintaining personal hygiene. We aim to build knowledge, foster self-efficacy, and increase confidence and body literacy.

Reusable pads Workshops

To improve environmental sustainability and to reduce cost during menstruation, we have design Eco friendly pads to improve health of girls. these pads are made with bamboo charcoal fabric which is reusable. Materials for Eco friendly pads are Bamboo charcoal fabric, Organic cotton, polyurethene laminate water proof (PUL) buttons packaging.

Teenage pregnancy in Cameroon

In Cameroon, 3 out of 10 teen girls fall pregnant and drop out of school.

Teenage pregnancy in Cameroon is a significant public health issue, with roughly 24% to 25% of adolescent girls aged 15-19 being pregnant or having already given birth. Within school settings, data indicates high rates of unplanned pregnancies, causing many girls to drop out, particularly in the Southwest Region.

Teenage pregnancies occur when girls are denied the right to make decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being.

Girls must be able to make decisions about their bodies and their futures and have access to appropriate health services and education.
